Saturday is bound to treat firework lovers around Monte Carlo, Monaco. It’s when the annual International Pyromelodic Fireworks Competition will start. The competition will run on four nights throughout July and August, providing thrilling fireworks experiences. What is the competition about and how to get involved?
Introduction to the International Pyromelodic Fireworks Competition
The competition has been running since 1966 as a pyrotechnical contest. The best fireworks groups around the world showed off their talent in the early years. In 1996, the contest changed things around and added music to the displays.
The event involves four global teams, each performing a 20-minute show on separate nights. The displays are viewed and ranked by a jury made up of members from Monaco’s Municipal Council. There will also be representatives from the art world. Aside from the official jury, the general public also gets to vote on their favourite online.
As mentioned, the festival has celebrated fireworks and music for a long time. Last year, due to the horrific terrorist attack in Nice, the competition was cancelled.
The displays take place in the Port Hercule area, pictured above, and spectators can best enjoy the show from Quai Albert 1er. The event is free – however, due to limited viewing space, you should make your way to the area early enough to ensure you get a good spot.
Dates and the participants in 2017
In 2017, the first show will take place on Saturday 22nd and the performing team is a French group Pyragric. The group’s performance is titled Good Vibes Only and it features songs like Don’t Stop Me Now and I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.
The second performer will be an Austrian group Steyrfire Austria. You can see them perform on 29th July and experience fireworks to the tunes of Ennio Morricone and Queen. Here’s a glimpse of what to expect from the group:
August 5th will be the third night and the stage is set for an American group Arthur Rozzi Pyrotechnics. Their pyromelodic display will feature Adele’s Hello and Lana Del Rey’s Video Games, among others. The final display takes place on August 12th. Australian group Howard and Sons Pyrotechnics will mark a return to the competition. The group performed in Monte Carlo in 1981. Their Kamuro Disco display has fireworks exploding to Daft Punk and Donna Summer.
The two displays in July will begin at 10:00 pm. In August, you need to make your way close to the marina by 9:30 pm, which is when the displays will fire up the night sky.
