What is a Roman Candle?

A Roman Candle is the traditional name for a type of firework that has been around for centuries. It is one of the simplest forms of fireworks, consisting of a cardboard tube with one or more stars inside.

When ignited, the firework launches the stars into the air, creating a series of visual effects. The stars can produce various colours and effects, such as crackles, bursts, or trails, depending on their composition. Roman Candles are popular for their relatively simple design and the variety of visual displays they can produce.

Why Is It Called a Roman Candle?

It is believed that this particular firework is named after the ancient Roman practice of using similar pyrotechnic techniques in their festivals and celebrations. The Romans were known for their grand public displays and spectacles, often incorporating fire and light to create awe-inspiring events.Ā

Ā

The term ā€œRoman Candleā€ is also a reference to the cylindrical shape and the way the firework sequentially ejects its stars, reminiscent of a candle burning and emitting light. Once the firework is lit, it releases stars or shells one at a time, much like how a candle’s flame flickers and burns steadily over time. This sequential ejection creates a prolonged and enchanting visual effect, similar to the enduring glow of a candle. The design and function of the Roman candle evoke the imagery of a candle’s flame.

How Are They made?

A Roman Candle firework is mainly made up of four components. These components work together to create a burst of stars or shells into the air, producing a series of colourful and captivating effects.

  • Cardboard Tube: A long, cylindrical tube made of heavy paper or cardboard.
  • Lift Charges: Small amounts of gunpowder (or another propellant) placed beneath each star to launch it out of the tube.
  • The Stars: Small balls or cylinders made of a combustible composition that produces colourful light when ignited. These are stacked inside the tube.
  • Delay Composition: Material placed between each star that burns slowly, providing a delay between the ejection of each star.

Setting Up Correctly

As always, setting up any firework safely and effectively requires careful attention to detail.

Ā

Here are some steps to follow when setting up a Roman candle firework:

  1. Follow Instructions: Always read the manufacturer’s instructions and safety warnings on the firework.
  2. Choose a Safe Location: Find a clear, open area away from buildings, trees, and other flammable materials. Also, ensure the ground is level and stable.
  3. Stabilise the Firework: Secure the Roman candle by either partially burying the base in the ground or placing it in a sturdy holder. If burying, ensure about half of the tube is below ground to prevent it from tipping over.
  4. Angle the Firework: Point the Roman candle away from people, animals, and structures. The ideal angle is slightly away from the audience, ensuring the ejected stars travel safely.
  5. Prepare a Safety Zone: Establish a safety perimeter around the firing area, typically at least 50 feet away.
  6. Have Safety Equipment Ready: Keep a bucket of water, a hose, or a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.
  7. Ignite the Firework: Use a long-handled lighter or a punk to ignite the fuse at arm’s length. Stand back immediately after lighting to avoid any accidental discharge.
  8. Dispose of the Firework: After the firework has completely discharged and cooled down, dispose of it properly. Soak it in water before discarding it to ensure there are no remaining embers.

Safety and Legal Considerations

When using Roman Candles or any type of fireworks, it’s essential to be aware of local laws and regulations regarding their use. Many areas have specific rules about where and when fireworks can be set off, and failure to comply with these regulations can result in legal consequences.Ā

Ā

Always check with local authorities to ensure you are following all applicable laws. Additionally, always prioritise safety and never attempt to modify or alter fireworks, as this can lead to dangerous and unpredictable results.

At Firework Crazy, we have a wide range of Roman candles to suit every occasion. By understanding the origins, components, and proper setup, you can safely enjoy these traditional fireworks and their captivating displays.
