If you’re spending a week on Spain’s east coast at the end of June or beginning of July, the Tarragona International Fireworks competition is a fantastic event that we recommend you take the time to attend.

Whether you’re driving down the Spanish east coast, spending time in Tarragona itself, or even if you’re nearby – Barcelona is just over an hour away on public transport or in the car – the competition is a great event that brings out all the locals aswell as attracting visitors from across Spain and indeed from around Europe. Over the entirety of the festival it is common for over 60,000 people to attend.
About the Tarragona International Fireworks Competition 2016
This year’s competition, which is the 26th edition following the creation of the event in 1990, takes place from June 29th to July 2nd. If you’re looking for a night out, then this is a great way to have one; the fireworks don’t start until 10:30pm! That gives you plenty of time to sample the great restaurants and bars of this beautiful city before heading down to the Playa del Miracle beachfront, which is where the action takes place.
2016’s Tarragona International Fireworks Competition Entries
This year, 18 fireworks display teams – 11 of Spain and 7 internationally based ones – applied to enter the Tarragona International Fireworks Competition. The committee that chooses the entrants eventually settled on three Spanish entries and one international entrant.
These are:
Xaraiva, performing their display on June 29th.
Valecea, performing their display on June 30th.
Pirotecnia Valenciana, performing their display on July 1st.
China International Firevision, performing their display on July 2nd.
Check out the videos below of two of the brilliant entries from 2015.
Big Rewards
The fireworks display team adjudged to have put on the biggest and best display wins the right to host the main fireworks display at Tarragona’s next big event, the Santa Tecla Festival, which takes place later in the year from 15th – 24th September.
