Staying Safe on Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night is one of the most entertaining nights of the year. There are plenty of public events on and around November 5th and throwing your own Bonfire Night party is always a great idea. But in order to have a good time, you need to keep safe.
If you are thinking of attending a firework event or throwing your own party display on Bonfire night, here are the safety tips you need to keep in mind.

Always follow the instructions

Whether you are buying fireworks or just attending a Bonfire Night party, you need to do what you are told. There are times for rebelling against the rules but it definitely isn’t when you are dealing with fire and explosives.
So, if you are attending a public firework or bonfire display, stay in the designated areas – don’t try to find your own viewing spot that’s too close to the action. If you are creating your own display, read the firework instructions and safety recommendations. Follow these instructions!

Keep the right safety distance

In terms of safety distance, you have three different types of fireworks: category 1 fireworks are indoor fireworks, category 2 require around 5-8 metres of safety distance and category 3 requires a minimum of 25 metres of safety distance.

Store, check and dispose of your fireworks safely

Make sure you store your fireworks safely. This means keeping them away from flammable items and preventing them from getting wet. Before you are about to shoot the fireworks, make sure to inspect them. If the firework looks broken, feels slightly wet or moist or has any other abnormalities, avoid firing it. Place it somewhere safe and take back to the store where you bought it.
Shoot fireworks from a firm ground and from tubes and launch pads specifically designed for them. If the firework doesn’t light up, do not return to it immediately. Wait for a minute and then go check what is happening – do not re-attempt to light it.
Store unexploded fireworks safely and return them to your retailer. Put out any hot embers your bonfire might have or any residue left behind by the fireworks.

Wear the right protective gear

You need to wear the right gear when shooting fireworks. This includes a hat and pair of gloves that protect your skin from any fire residue that might occur. You also need to wear protective goggles to keep your eyes safe.

Don’t joke around or get drunk

If you are in charge of fireworks, you do not want to be drunk! If you’ve had a few drinks, just leave the fireworks for another occasion or ask someone who is sober to create the show.
Fireworks are not a joke – don’t treat them like they are. Never point fireworks to another person or use them to do pranks. Firework displays are beautiful on their own and you don’t need to add to the drama.

Keep an eye on the children

Children can get quite excited on Bonfire Night but remember to keep an eye on them. You don’t want them to have access to the fireworks and you need to make sure they understand not to play with fire. Sparklers are safe to use with older children – just consider having the child wear gloves, don’t allow them to run and keep an eye on what they are doing.
Bonfire night parties are a lot of fun and you should definitely consider creating a fireworks display on November 5th. Just remember to stay safe and follow the above instructions!
