Planning Your Wedding Fireworks Display

This post was written in collaboration with our friends at Freak Music.

You will have already planned your wedding day to be a magical occasion, but could you add even more magic? One of the most exciting ways to add sparkle and magic to your big day is by organising a fireworks display.

Here’s what you need to know when planning a wedding fireworks display?

Do You Want Fireworks in the First Place?

Start your planning process by considering whether fireworks are your cup of tea. We love them, but we know they’re not for everyone!

Many couples don’t know a lot about having fireworks as wedding entertainment. Some think (wrongly!) that it will be too difficult or expensive.

Having a stunning fireworks display can not only be affordable, it’s a lovely way to entertain and wow your wedding guests. A good start is to think if you’d enjoy the display, and then start looking around for the different ways of incorporating fireworks into your big day.

Check With Your Wedding Venue

If you’ve already booked a wedding venue or you have one in mind, check if they allow fireworks. There might be certain restrictions in place, such as only being able to use a professional fireworks display company, using low noise fireworks, or setting up and holding the display before a certain time.

Set Your Fireworks Budget

Once you know if you can have fireworks at your wedding, start thinking about the budget for your display. You might find you have some money left over in your initial wedding budget, or if you want fireworks so much you might decide to increase your budget a little!

The majority of UK couples set aside £200 to £500 for a wedding fireworks display. What you spend all depends on your wedding budget and your hopes for what the display should look like, but you don’t need to spend thousands to get a stunning fireworks show.

Choose Between a Professional and a DIY Display

Depending on the restrictions your wedding venue might impose on your fireworks display, it might be possible to choose between a professional and holding a DIY display. There are pros and cons to both options, so pick whichever option feels the right for you.

Professional displays don’t require that much planning or organising on your part. You’ll get to enjoy bigger fireworks and have the peace of mind that things will go smoothly. Once you’ve contacted a fireworks display company they’ll usually ask for your wedding venue and details, and liaise with them and take care of everything themselves.

Of course, it’s possible to buy your own fireworks and create just the kind of display you want as well if you so choose. Just remember you’ll need someone responsible (and sober!) to fire the display.

Many firework display companies can provide you with fireworks, a layout, and a remote ignition kit, meaning all you need to do is set up and press the button. Easy!

Consider the Timing

Having a fireworks display as the finale to your wedding is a great idea. For most people, their idea of having fireworks at a wedding involves everyone outside in the venue courtyard towards the end of the evening while the display happens.

This isn’t your only option! You could have fireworks when you leave the church, during your cake cutting, or as the backdrop to the first dance!

Don’t Forget About the Weather

The final element in planning a wedding fireworks display is thinking about the weather. While fireworks can be fired in a bit of a drizzle, you still have to consider the weather conditions. It’s not just about firework safety, you don’t really want to have your wedding guests stood in the rain for long!

Consider whether the fireworks can be viewed indoors, if you can provide raincoats or umbrellas in the case of a drizzle and to have a Plan B in terms of entertainment in the (thankfully usually rare!) event you need to call off the show.

With these planning tips in mind, you can add a bit of extra magic to your wedding with fireworks. Fireworks are always a popular showstopper to add to a party, and you can create affordable and dazzling shows that won’t blow your budget out of the water.
