World’s largest firework competition is about to begin in Montreal. The Montreal fireworks festival lasts for eight days, creating some of the best firework displays of the year. Here’s everything you need to know about the competition this year.
The History of the Competition
Montreal Fireworks Festival is better known for its French name, L’International des Feux Loto-Québec. It has been taking place since 1985, and it’s one of Canada’s and the world’s most beloved fireworks competition.
The competition is open for international firework groups and each participating group must combine fireworks with music. The displays are judged and there isn’t a fireworks group in the world that doesn’t want to win the top spot.

Montreal Fireworks Festival 2018
The competition in 2018 will be held throughout July and early August. It’s a big tourist attraction to Montreal and if you want to enjoy the competition up close, you want to book your tickets and your accommodation soon. The official website for the competition is a good place to start planning for the event.
When and where?
Montreal Fireworks Festival takes place on eight nights in La Ronde amusement park, which is right in front of the beautiful Lac des Dauphins. You will be able to purchase tickets to the closed La Ronde area, although it is possible to enjoy the show a bit further afield too. There’s a great guide online for the best vantage points to see the show.
The shows begin at 10 pm each night and each show lasts for 30 minutes. The shows will take place on the following dates:
- Saturday, 7th of July (Opening Night)
- Wednesday, 11th of July
- Saturday, 14th of July
- Wednesday, 18th of July
- Saturday, 21st of July
- Saturday, 28th of July
- Wednesday, 1st of August
- Wednesday, 8th of August (Closing Night)
Note that the opening and closing shows are not part of the actual competition. But they will be worth checking out, nonetheless.

Montreal Fireworks Festival is an event all firework groups want to perform at. It always gets the best in the world and this year is no exception. Here are the groups performing this year and the theme of their show:

Furthermore, the opening night will be dedicated to Abba, with Royal Pyrotechnie presenting a show called ‘Tribute to Abba’. On the final night, Rozzi’s Famous Fireworks creates a show called ‘For Your Eyes Only’.
