Malta’s History of Fireworks

It might come as a surprise to you, but this small European country has a strong history of fireworks. The tradition to shooting them dates back to the time of the Order of the Knights of St. John.
During special occasions, fireworks were consideredas an expression of joy and the fireworks were created by firing off explosives from mortars.
Under the British rule, the Maltese craft of fireworks developed and in the 19th and 20th century fireworks were used during the most common British holidays.
The country has around 35 fireworks factories scattered around the towns and villages! Even if you miss the actual fireworks festival, you’ll be able to experience fireworks in Malta during the summer on any given night.

The Birth of the Festival

The current Malta International Fireworks Festival is part of this tradition and in 2015,it will be celebrating its 14th year. It is part of bigger annual celebrations to mark Malta’s accession to the European Union.
Visitors from all over the world flog to the island. As well as tourists, the festival has also attracted a number of foreign pyrotechnic companies from all over the world.
In fact, the final competitors for this year’s event were shortlisted from a long list of applicants. This increased competition is sure to guarantee a fantastic show on all three days!

The Event Details

The celebration will kick off in a small fishing village called Marsaxlokk on 25th April. There are plenty of other things to do on the day from small music events to experiencing the wonderful cuisine of the region.
