When you’re setting up a fireworks show, you always have to consider the weather conditions. Sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t co-operate and firing fireworks might be too dangerous. One of the world’s most famous fireworks competitions felt this last year when a typhoon cancelled the show. This year, however, the competition is back to entertain the crowds!
What happened in 2017?
In 2017, a powerful typhoon Hato wrecked the Macao region. The whole city was devastated by the event and considering the extent of the recovery and restoration process, the organisers decided to cancel the display. This was, of course, devastating to the teams and fans of fireworks but you always have to put safety first. The fireworks community is a lovely bunch of people and it came together to help a shaken community!
Macao International Fireworks Display Contest 2018
The good news is that this anticipated event is back in 2018. The firework contest will set the night sky of Macao alight on multiple nights with crowds gathering to enjoy the show.
The competition will take place at 9.00 pm and 9.40 pm on the following days:
- September 1, 8, 15 and 24
- October 1
The festivities include other competitions as well. The Macao Government Tourism Office is hosting other competitions in photography, student drawing and trophy design. All of these ensure there’s a lot to see and to experience.
Who are the fireworks teams?
This year’s line-up has many great teams to represent their countries. The competing teams are:
- September 1:
- Platinum Fireworks, Inc. from the Philippines
- Faseecom from Korea
- September 8:
- Marutamaya Ogatsu Fireworks Co. from Japan
- HC Pyrotechnics from Belgium
- September 15:
- Alpha Pyrotechnie from France
- Grupo Luso Pirotecnia from Portugal
- September 24:
- Potsdamer Fauerwerk GmbH from Germany
- FIREevent – Die Feuerwerker from Austria
- October 1:

The competition is bound to be fierce. The last time it was held in 2016, the winner of the Macao International Fireworks Display Contest came from Japan. Marutamaya Ogatsu Fireworks Co is also competing this year so it’ll be fun to see if they can win again! You can see their winning performance here:
Where to watch the fireworks?
The competition takes place on the Sea Area in front of the Macao Tower. You don’t have to purchase a ticket but do make your way there early enough to get a good spot.
There are many good viewing spots across the seafront and you can find plenty of suggestions online to find a nice spot a bit further from the hustle and bustle. Some of the tallest buildings in Macao will also offer options to view the show.
What if you can’t make it to Macao?
If a trip to China is not on the horizon, you can still enjoy the show. You can watch the displays on YouTube the next day so keep your eye out for the performances.
When it comes to great displays, you don’t just have to watch them – you can also make them. Buy fireworks from our online store and hold your own garden competition to celebrate fireworks!
