Do you remember Bonfire Night in the 70s or 80s? When Jumping Jacks shot across the patio, paper snaps popped in your hands, and Woolworths selection boxes were the highlight of November?
Fireworks have changed a lot since then. Today’s versions are safer, more reliable and UKCA or CE-marked, but they’re still just as fun. Many of those old favourites now have modern equivalents you can still enjoy today without the risk.
With Bonfire Night just around the corner, here are the most fun novelty fireworks you can buy today, along with the retro classics that inspired them.
What are ‘Novelty’ Fireworks?
When people talk about novelty fireworks, they’re usually referring to small, ground-based fireworks with fun effects that don’t shoot up into the sky or make huge bangs.
They’re the kind you use in the garden, on patios or at family Bonfire Night parties, things like sparklers, fountains, smoke effects, spinning ground fireworks and strobes.
Do You Remember These Nostalgic Fireworks?
Before fireworks came with warning labels and CE stamps, Bonfire night was a lot louder and messier, filled with classic fireworks such as:
- Jumping Jacks: little strips that shoot off in random directions, fizzing and crackling across the ground.
- Paper Snaps: twisted paper pellets you threw at the floor to get a crack.
- Bengal Matches: matchstick-sized fireworks that burned bright red, blue or green in your hand
- Strobe Pots: Blinding white strobes that lit up the garden and left you seeing spots
- Pharaoh’s snakes: Little black pellets that grew into creepy ash ‘snakes’ when lit
- Air Bombs/Bangers: Single-shot tubes or tiny salutes that made one almighty bang.
While you can’t buy Jumping Jacks or Bengal Matches from Woolworths anymore, there are modern versions of many classic fun fireworks that are safer and legal.
Best Fun Novelty Fireworks You Can Buy for Bonfire Night
While the classics of the ’70s and ’80s are long gone (or banned), plenty of modern fireworks capture that same excitement. Here are the best novelty fireworks we offer, along with the retro favourites they replace.
1. Party Snaps by Black Cat Fireworks
Modern equivalent of: Paper Snaps / Throw-Down Bangers / Devil Bangers
Party snaps are the modern, low-risk version of the little paper bangers you used to get in corner shops. They’re suitable for supervised family use and meet current UKCA safety standards.
They create a satisfying crack on impact without sparks or fuses, making them ideal for garden gatherings and quiet displays.
2. Strobocop by Vulcan Fireworks
Modern equivalent of: Strobe Pots / Flash Bangs
Strobocop brings back the blinding white flashes of old-school strobe pots, but in a safer, more controlled way. Unlike unpredictable flare pots that can scorch patios and leave you seeing stars for ten minutes, this CE-approved version emits rapid strobe effects without the danger.
If you loved those blinding flash pots growing up, the strobocop gives you the same effect without the chaos and risk to your eyesight
3. Cyclone Mini Spinner and Crazy Spinner by Vulcan Fireworks

4. Crackling Astronauts by Vulcan Fireworks
Modern equivalent of: Strobe Pots / Flash Bangs

5. Bengal Fuego Mix by Vulcan Fireworks
Modern equivalent of: Bengal Matches / Coloured Torches
The Bengal Fuego Mix is the modern take on the old Bengal matches people used to wave around in the garden. Each one emits a bold, coloured flame and smoke effect, without sparks or big bangs.
They’re great for adding atmosphere, colour effects and photo-friendly lighting to Bonfire Night displays.
6. Crackling Space Cadets by Vulcan Fireworks
Modern equivalent of: Crackling Balls / Ground Bees
Crackling space cadets are a fun upgrade of the mini crackling balls and ground bees that used to come in old retro selection boxes.
Once lit, they burst into crackling sparks that stay close to the ground, adding movement and noise without going aerial.
7. Spellcasters Handheld Fountains by Standard
Modern equivalent of: Indoor Ice Fountains / Vintage Handheld Sparklers
Spellcasters are the modern, handheld version of those sparkler-style fountains that came in old celebration packs.
Instead of just glowing, they produce small fountain effects with coloured sparks and crackling sounds, making them perfect for back gardens, birthdays, and bonfire night photos.

Bonfire Night Safety: Then vs Now
In the 1970s and 1980s, firework safety was often an afterthought. Most families made it up as they went along, and buckets of water by the back door, dad with a lighter and fireworks nailed to trees, were all part of the fun.
Today, things look very different. Fireworks are regulated, UKCA or CE-marked and designed with small gardens, neighbours and pets in mind.
Even novelty snaps and sparklers now come with age guidance and safety advice. Attitudes have shifted as well, and most people today understand the risks and know why it’s important to supervise children, maintain a safe distance, and follow the firework code.
It is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18 or for anyone under 18 to possess fireworks in a public place. Always follow the safety distances and instructions printed on the packaging.
For more information on using fireworks safely, see Fireworks: the law.
